What happens in my first appointment?
We know that visiting a new doctor can sometimes feel daunting, especially if you’re worried about your health, have ongoing symptoms, or simply haven’t felt heard elsewhere.
That’s why our appointments are designed around one simple principle: giving you enough time. This page explains exactly what happens during your first private GP consultation, including medical history, examinations, tests, and follow-up care.
At our clinic, your consultation isn’t about rushing through a checklist in 10 minutes. It’s about understanding you properly, listening carefully, and helping you move forward with confidence.

Arriving at the Clinic
When you arrive, our reception team will welcome you and direct you the waiting area on the lower ground floor, outside our GP clinic room.
When you booked your appointment online, you’ll have received emails to help you provide us with some medical history and ID. If this information hasn’t been provided before your arrival, the reception team may help you do so. You may find it helpful to check you have access to your NHS App, where you can find summaries and current medications lists.
Before your appointment begins, we will ask you to provide identification to confirm your identity. This helps us:
- Keep your medical records secure
- Ensure accurate patient information
- Maintain safe prescribing and clinical standards
We recommend arriving a few minutes early to complete any necessary registration paperwork.
Getting to Know You
Your doctor will begin by taking a detailed medical history. This is an important part of safe, high-quality healthcare and helps your GP understand the bigger picture behind your symptoms or concerns.
You may be asked about:
- Existing medical conditions
- Medications
- Allergies
- Previous treatments or surgery
- Family health history
- Stress, sleep, diet, exercise, and lifestyle
Many conditions cannot be properly assessed in a rushed appointment. Taking time to explore your health background often helps identify important patterns or contributing factors that may otherwise be missed, and will lead to better outcomes for you and your health.

Talking About the Reason for Your Visit
Once your GP has a good understanding of your history, you will discuss the main reason for your visit. This could involve:
- Physical symptoms
- Mental health concerns
- Persistent problems that have not improved
- Preventative health checks
- Hormonal or fatigue issues
- Long-term conditions
- General health advice
You will have time to explain what has been happening in your own words, without feeling hurried or cut off, and to ask questions throughout the consultation. We encourage you to ask questions openly and discuss any concerns you may have around your health in general, or this reason for visiting us specifically.
Examinations and Investigations
If needed, your doctor may perform an examination during your consultation. Some patients may also benefit from further investigations such as blood tests, scans, ECGs, or specialist referrals.
If this is the case, your GP will explain clearly:
- Why the investigation is recommended
- What it may help diagnose or rule out
- What the process involves
- The cost of any private testing
You will always receive a clear quotation before proceeding.
There is absolutely no obligation to make a decision during the appointment. You are welcome to take time to think about your options and decide what feels right for you.

Why Longer Appointments Matter
Modern GP services face enormous demand, and many NHS appointments are limited to a mere 10 minutes.
That system can work well for straightforward issues, but many patients feel their concerns are more complex than a brief appointment allows, and would like to take a more proactive, holistic approach to their care.
Our clinic is built around a different model.
Healthcare decisions are important. Rushed conversations rarely lead to reassurance or clarity. Longer appointments allow us to build a better understanding of your health and create a more thoughtful plan for your care.
What Happens Next?
At the end of your appointment, your doctor will explain any next steps clearly.
Depending on your situation, this may include:
- Treatment recommendations
- Prescriptions
- Lifestyle advice
- Further investigations
- Referral to a specialist
- A follow-up consultation
Our aim is for every patient to leave being informed, supported, and confident about what happens next.
