Meet Dr Mayooran Siva
“The right treatment isn’t always simply what’s right for the disease. It has to be right for the patient.”
Dr Siva first became certain that medicine was the right career for him while gaining work experience in a busy hospital as a student. Seeing the pace, variety and impact of clinical work first-hand confirmed that this was where he wanted to build his career.
His early professional life was spent in surgery. He completed six years of surgical training in major London teaching hospitals. This experience gave him a strong grounding in clinical assessment, anatomy and procedural medicine. It also developed his clinical decision-making skills before he moved into general practice.
That combination of surgical and GP experience continues to shape the way he works today.
Over the years, Dr Siva’s understanding of good medicine has become increasingly patient-centred. Rather than asking only what the standard treatment is for a particular condition, he believes the more important question is what treatment is right for the individual sitting in front of him.
For Dr Siva, a strong doctor-patient relationship starts with exactly that: care centred on the patient rather than the condition.
Approach to Patient Care
“Listen first. Don’t interrupt. Give the patient the opportunity to tell their story.”
That principle guides Dr Siva’s approach to a first consultation.
He believes patients often provide the most important clues themselves if they’re given enough space to explain what’s happening without being hurried or interrupted. The first part of the consultation is therefore about understanding the patient’s story before moving on to examination, investigation or treatment.
A diagnosis matters, and so does the effect that diagnosis is having on someone’s work, family life, independence, wellbeing and priorities. Understanding those wider consequences helps him recommend treatment that is clinically appropriate but also realistic for the person receiving it.
This approach is particularly important when caring for older patients or people living with several health problems at once, where the technically correct treatment for one condition may not necessarily be the best choice when the whole person is taken into account.
