Meet Dr Priya Patel
“What makes healthcare genuinely effective is a strong doctor-patient relationship built on trust and dedicated time.”
Dr Patel was drawn to medicine because it combined her interest in medical science with compassionate, individualised patient care. The human side of general practice continues to give her the greatest satisfaction. She enjoys getting to know her patients and building lasting relationships, and most importantly she values the opportunity to make a tangible difference to their lives.
Her experience has taken her through a wide range of healthcare settings. Before and during her training in general practice, Dr Patel worked across Acute Internal Medicine, Accident & Emergency, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Psychiatry. She has since worked as both a salaried and locum GP in Bromley.
That breadth of experience has shaped the way she practises today. It means she’s comfortable assessing patients with complex or uncertain symptoms. She also looks beyond the immediate problem to consider physical health, mental wellbeing, lifestyle and longer-term risks. This approach is one reason Dr Patel is particularly interested in preventative medicine – she believes healthcare shouldn’t only be there when something has gone wrong.
Approach to Patient Care
“I want to offer an unhurried, empathetic space where I can actively listen, validate someone’s concerns and involve them directly in every decision about their care.”
Good general practice starts with having enough time to understand why you’ve come and what you’re worried about. It also means understanding what you want from the consultation. This can be particularly important when symptoms don’t have an obvious explanation. It can also help when several health problems interact or when physical and mental health are closely connected.
An emphasis on working with patients runs throughout her practice. Dr Patel believes every patient should be able to expect empathetic, evidence-based care, clear communication and genuine commitment from their doctor.
It’s also central to her interest in preventative healthcare. Rather than treating health as a series of isolated problems, she enjoys helping patients understand their risks and make informed decisions that can protect their health over the longer term.
