Meet Dr Sarbjit Chauhan

“What I want is for patients to feel relaxed and to know they’re speaking to someone they can trust.“

For Dr Chauhan, the enduring appeal of medicine is simple: the opportunity to help people by working out what’s wrong, treating it and, wherever possible, making them better.

More than 27 years in general practice have given him the opportunity to do that for thousands of patients and to see primary care evolve enormously along the way. Throughout that change, the relationship between doctor and patient has remained central to the way he practises.

Dr Chauhan believes trust starts by giving people the opportunity to explain themselves properly. Rather than approaching a consultation as an isolated symptom or test result, he wants to understand the person in front of him, their wider health and what matters to them.

When it comes to making decisions, that means combining the latest clinical evidence with the patient’s own views and priorities.

Approach to Patient Care

“Before making recommendations, I want to make a holistic assessment of the patient.”

After almost three decades in general practice, Dr Chauhan knows that what initially brings someone to the doctor isn’t always the whole story.

His consultations therefore start by giving patients the opportunity to talk. He wants to understand what’s happening, what they’re concerned about and how their health is affecting their everyday life before deciding what should happen next.

That becomes especially important when managing long-term conditions. A theoretically perfect treatment isn’t necessarily the right treatment if it doesn’t take account of the patient’s circumstances, preferences or other health concerns.

Dr Chauhan’s approach is to bring those things together: the patient’s views on one side and the latest clinical evidence on the other.

The aim is a consultation in which patients feel comfortable speaking openly, understand the reasoning behind the advice they’re given and can have confidence in the decisions made about their care.

Outside the Clinic

After a working life spent largely in consulting rooms, Dr Chauhan prefers something rather more active when he isn’t seeing patients.

Cycling gives him the chance to get outside, exercise and switch off from the demands of clinical practice.

It’s also a fitting interest for a doctor who’s spent much of his career helping patients manage their long-term health: staying active remains one of the simplest things any of us can do for our physical and mental wellbeing.
