What’s involved?
Depending on the tests you need, we may ask for a urine sample, a simple swab or a quick blood test. Experienced doctors carry out the process discreetly, and it usually takes only a few minutes. Your doctor will discuss the most appropriate tests, explain the process and answer any questions. We’ll contact you with your results and support you with any next steps.

Who is it for?
The package may be suitable if you:

You don’t need to work out which tests you need yourself, your GP will discuss your circumstances and advise you on the appropriate testing.
What tests will I have?
The type of sample depends on the infection being tested for.
Urine or swab
Used to test for infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Depending on your circumstances, a swab may be recommended from another site, such as the throat or rectum.
Blood test
Used to test for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
Your GP will explain which samples you need and what each test is checking for.
What happens if I test positive?
A positive result doesn’t mean you’re on your own. Your GP will explain your result, answer your questions and discuss what treatment or further care you may need. They will also advise you about preventing transmission and, where appropriate, partner notification.
If specialist sexual health services are required, we’ll help you understand the next steps and arrange an appropriate referral where necessary.
Confidentiality
We understand that privacy is particularly important when having sexual health testing. Your consultation and results are treated as confidential medical information. We do not routinely share sexual health information with your NHS GP without your consent.
In certain circumstances, information may need to be shared to support your care or protect someone’s health, such as where there is a serious risk of harm or where required by law. Your GP will discuss this with you wherever possible.
If you are diagnosed with an infection that could be passed to a sexual partner, your GP will discuss partner notification with you and explain the options available to help protect anyone who may have been exposed.
